Weapons
In the Roman Empire warfare was of big concern, and so the Romans used their technology to give their soldiers the best tools for the job. Roman weapons range from all different types, from close quarter combat to extremely long range weapons. Most weapons were made from iron, or copper. Weapons in a regular soldier’s arsenal usually included different types of swords, daggers, and spears. The swords were usually made out of iron, some were cheaply made for regular soldiers, and some were custom made for leaders, kings, and for the wealthy. Daggers were basically knives, used mostly as a side arm, or a last resort back-up weapon, they were carried by most soldiers, and used by thieves, and even carried by regular people for protection. Spears were used by both cavalry and foot soldiers. A spear was a long pole of either wood or metal, with a sharp metal point at the end.
Armor & Protection
Roman soldiers were also equipped with armor that was used for protection. Most soldiers wore helmets made from iron, and these were very standard. Torso protection in this time was made from hard leather, and this would protect against some attacks, but projectiles could tear through easily. Some soldiers would use metal plates that would protect against and arrows. About all of the Roman soldiers were issued a shield that was made of thick wood bordered by copper alloy or iron; the shields were oval, rectangular, or hexagonal.
